JULY 20, 2009 UPDATE

On July 17, 2009, The Little Flower Clinic became its own not for profit organization. This was done for organizational reasons. We continue to support them in their ministry, but it is no longer a direct ministry of the BSC. Please contact them directly at (870) 423-5363 for further information on how you can support their medical outreach to the poor in our local area.

The Little Flower Clinic for the poor opened in 1993 as a ministry of the Brothers and Sisters of Charity at Little Portion Hermitage.

Embracing our Lord’s gospel, we serve Jesus suffering in the guise of the young and old who are ailing in body, mind, and spirit, by offering ourselves and material means when possible in the spirit of love.

The clinic is a place of true Christian healing and support, with an all volunteer staff including two of our fine local physicians, Dr. Kevin Richter and Dr. Daniel Jones, and our fine optometrist, Dr. Jim Dudley, who comes to the clinic on the fourth Tuesday of each month, Steve Mann, Kathleen Sigler, Virginia Benefiel, Kathy Clark, the doctor’s nurses, Caroline Shepler, the clinic manager, and Kathleen Siegler, who also handles the pharmaceutical assistance program for free medicine.

The clinic is open for physicians care on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month. On Friday afternoons the nurses fill presciptions,

do blood sugar and blood pressure checks and offer nutritional education. Despite the brief hours, they serve an average of 120 patients per month. These are people who would ordinarily fall through the cracks of our medical system, too poor to afford medical insurance, and yet not young or old enough by government guidelines to qualify for Medicaid. Many of these are hard working, industrious people, working for minimum wage, or are disbabled and unable to work who may not ever receive health care without this facility. Many of our patients are receiving health care for the first time! It is not infrequent that a patient is heard to comment that they don't know what they would do without Little Flower Clinic.

Among the services provided are physician’s exams, nutritional counseling, vision testing, urine tests, blood sugar monitoring, pregnancy tests, and counseling. We can also provide referrals to private and governmental agencies which assist in money, housing, rehabilitation, pregnancy, food, extended medical care and other needs.

While patients are encouraged to make donations if they are able, most of our funding comes from charitable donations of money, equipment and medications.
